Finally - a new track!!!!

The Tunnel Above (Newport)

Roger Newport - guitars, bass, keyboards

Chris McHugh - drums

Eric Darken - percussion

This was recorded at a rather leisurely pace between September and December 2005.  I finally got around to mixing it in February 2006. Most of the myriad guitar parts were done on a Gibson Les Paul Standard although there’s a couple of Fender Stratocasters adding some top end to the chorus rhythm parts.  The final solo was also done using my favourite Fender Stratocaster fitted with EMG pickups and customised tone circuits (same spec as Dave Gilmour’s). All the electric guitar sounds were produced using a Line 6 POD XT (as were all my other tracks on this site). If you’re into recording guitar, don’t have hundreds of amps, and don’t live in a soundproof castle several miles away from your nearest neighbours, then you need one of these.  A fantastic piece of kit! The bass parts were done using a Bass POD.

Tracks from 2005

1. Evergreen (à la Metal!)  (Findlay/Josh)

All instruments played by Roger Newport

This is my metallic interpretation of Mostly Autumn’s classic. Recorded in September and October 2004, mainly using a PRS guitar, although there’s a Gibson Les Paul playing one of the (many) rhythm parts.   I would like to thank Heather Findlay and Bryan Josh for their permission to make this available.

2. Never The Rainbow  (Jennings/Findlay)

Roger Newport - lead and rhythm guitars, bass, drum programming

Dave White - keyboards, lead guitar

Recorded in January and February 2005 in conjunction with Dave White.  I used a 1999 Fender Stratocaster fitted with Kinman’s superb ‘Traditional’ pickups (exactly the same sound as the Fender originals but without the interference noise) for the rhythm parts and a PRS for my lead parts.  My Burns Brian May replica was brought into action for the 3-part harmony section in the instrumental section.  I believe Dave used his trusty Hamer guitar for all his parts.  Thanks to Heather and Iain for their blessing and support with this one.

3. A Song For Autumn  (Newport)

All instruments played by Roger Newport

The one that kicked all this offA Song For Autumn was written and recorded during November and December 2004.  In terms of guitars this is quite simple with just 3 guitar tracks recorded, all of them done using a Fender Stratocaster Deluxe (a 2004 model with the fantastic sounding new SCN pick-ups).

4. An Ode To Jimmy  (Newport)

All instruments played by Roger Newport

This is a song I actually wrote in 1999 but only got around to recording in 2005.  It’s inspired by some of the more relaxed and delicate moments of my greatest musical hero, Jimmy Page.  After spending ages failing to get the right sound using a very expensive microphone and even more expensive Martin D16V acoustic guitar, I eventually resorted to my trusty old Yamaha APX4 through a Yamaha AG acoutic pre-amp.

5. Mourning Light (White)

This isn’t one of mine, but Dave and I thought you might like to hear one of his compositions as well.   This is a song written in 1998 for a CD that Dave put out called Seasons of Fire.  He is joined by guitarist Dale Collins.
